Glass fabrics with Graphite

Our versatile production capabilities means that we can process very high fabric weights

Glass fabrics with Graphite – Compotex

Graphite dipping for glass fabric not only increases the temperature resistance of the fabric, but the graphite lubricates the fibres and gives flex and dynamic strength to the fabric in challenging high temperature environments.

Glass fibre fabrics dipped with graphite increase the maximum temperature resistance from 550˚C to 700˚C. The colour of the graphite dipped fabric is dark grey to black. Our advanced manufacturing means we can vary the fabric stiffness and graphite pick up to your requirements.

The most common weights of graphite dipped glass fabrics are at the heavy end of the specification, most commonly between 1000 and 3000 g/sqm.  Our versatile production capabilities means that we can process very high fabric weights.

Because of its dynamic properties, graphite is also used with silica fabric to improve the flex and fatigue performance of silica fabric parts. The weight range for these fabrics are lighter than for glass fabrics – commonly between 650 and 1250g/sqm.

Graphite

We were approached with a request for special graphite dipping of a 3000g/sqm glass fabric with a soft finish.

There were a number of decisions to make for this specification, including the pick-up of graphite and the softness required.

We received a short roll of the 3000g/sqm fabric for initial lab trials. We made some lab samples with our standard graphite specifications, but also with some different dip formulations. We produced the innovative new formulations because the customer’s requirements were special and we wanted to create a product that closely matched their required technical characteristics.

The lab samples were made and an initial decision was taken to go with one of the new formulations that gave the softest handle for the dipped fabric. Using the rest of the roll, we did a short production trial. The customer approved the production and the Compotex specification, and placed a bigger order.
