Aramid fabrics for rubber adhesion

We dip for both sulphur and peroxide rubbers

Aramid fabrics for rubber adhesion – Compotex

Aramid fabrics have high tensile, can operate up to 500 C, are fire retardant and have good abrasion resistance. They are commonly coated with rubber in high-performance dynamic applications.

The two chemical formulations of aramid, para- and meta- are used for very different applications. Para-aramid is known particularly for its strength and is mostly woven as continuous filament fabric, and is used for high-performance improvement to nylon or polyester fabrics. Meta-aramid is often spun as a more textured fabric and is used for its high temperature and fire retardant characteristics.

Compotex has developed advanced production technology, and coupled with our specialised manufacturing facilities, are able to offer you a great service for preparing the aramid fabric for adhesion to rubber.

Using Grilbond technology, we prime the para-aramid, and second coat with RFL for adhesion to sulphur cured Natural Rubber/SBR, Neoprene and Nitrile rubber. We can also bond para-aramid to peroxide curing rubbers like EPDM, FKM and NBR.

For meta-aramids which are commonly cured with VMQ silicone rubber for hoses and aerospace, Compotex is expert in silane dipping, for example using Momentive A174NT.

Aramid Fabrics for Rubber Adhesion Example

When a potential customer approached us for para-aramid reinforcement for neoprene rubber for lifting bags, we were able to immediately work from a Compotex proven specification.

The first step was to discuss and agree on the fabric properties, for example, the warp and weft tensile strength and fabric weight. Compotex offers a wide range of woven para-aramid fabrics up to 1750 mm width and at many different weights, usually in the range 100g/sqm to 1000g/sqm.

Next, we provided the lab and then small production samples of 20 metres, so that our customer could carry out their tests, for adhesion to their rubber compound and for making and testing the finished part.

Compotex is very well organised for fast lab and production samples, which means that we provided exactly what our customer was looking for, both in terms of fabric specification and dip specification. The result was fast development and quick results. Our customer turned a development into a finished part successfully and at speed.
